Topics: saved searches as filters

Sources → Your topics now saves a search as a topic, for example “climate change, global warming”: commas separate alternatives, and all words of one alternative must appear. Each topic gets its own filter after the categories, marked with a magnifier, and shows the matching articles of all your active sources, newest first. It looks at titles and summaries of the articles stored in this browser. Topics are part of the settings backup.

Hide dashboard tiles

Every dashboard tile, the weather included, now has an eye button that takes it off the dashboard. The source keeps refreshing and its articles stay in your feed. Hidden tiles, below the grid, lists what you've hidden and puts each tile back in its old place. The list is part of the settings backup.

Compact view and a dot for new articles

Settings → Appearance now has a compact view: the feed and Saved become short rows with a thumbnail, title, source and time, and a menu for the original link, sharing, saving and snoozing. In the main feed, in both layouts, a dot now marks articles you haven't seen yet. It goes after about three seconds on screen or when you open the article.

Settings → Appearance now has a text size with three steps: Small, Default and Large. It changes the text across the whole app at once, works on top of your browser's own font size, and is part of the settings backup.

Search your articles

A new search icon in the top bar finds articles by title, summary or full text as you type, saved ones included. Accents and case don't matter, and title matches come first. It covers only the articles stored in this browser, and your search stays on your device.

More careful AI tools

Fact check, summary and translation now give the AI service stricter instructions. A fact check rates each main claim on the same four-step scale and needs two independent sources to call it accurate or false. If the service cannot open the article, it should say so instead of guessing from the title. Answers can still differ between runs, so check the sources it cites.

Starter packs in your language

Hungarian starter packs are now suggested only if your browser speaks Hungarian or you pick Hungary for country news; your country choice is remembered. Under Manage sources the rest wait in a closed Other languages section. Culture and Tech & science are now split into an English and a Hungarian pack, so you can take just the half you read.

Installed on a phone, Burbl no longer paints the status or navigation bar bright blue: the bars follow your theme, or stay a quiet dark grey where the phone doesn't let them change. An already installed Burbl picks this up once the browser refreshes it, or right away if you reinstall it.

Saved up front, and a quick way back to the top

Saved now sits right after All, above the categories, and only shows up once you have saved an article. Further down the feed, a round arrow button in the bottom corner takes you back to the top.

The Burbl logo in the top bar now takes the colour of your chosen colour profile, in light and dark mode alike, and a soft glow in the same colour sits at the bottom of the page. Shared Burbl links also get a fresh preview image.

Save articles for later

Every card and the article view now have a Save button. Saved articles wait under Saved, after your categories in the filters, newest saved first, and stay until you remove them, even when they get old or their source is removed. Up to 500 fit, and they stay in this browser; a settings backup carries them along.

Badges, if you want them

Burbl can now award badges in bronze, silver and gold for following sources from several countries and languages, a favourite topic or a balanced mix, fact checks, reactions and a few hidden things. They are off by default; switch them on under Settings → Badges. Each earned badge gets its own colour and a metal ring, and you can share it as an image with just its name and tier. Everything is counted in this browser only, and an earned tier stays even if you remove sources later.

Next to the AI fact check, the article view now also offers Summarise and Translate. Each opens the article’s title and link in the AI service chosen in Settings, asking for a summary or a translation into your Burbl language. As before, nothing is sent until you click, and AI can be wrong.

A feed that is gone for good is now marked as ended instead of showing an error on every refresh: Burbl stops fetching it, keeps its articles readable and offers Retry and Remove. From 13 November this covers Reddit sources too. New suggestions on the Manage sources page add Lemmy communities (!community@instance), Mastodon accounts (@user@instance) and hashtags, Bluesky profiles and Hacker News.

Reddit has announced that it stops offering RSS feeds on 13 November 2026, so subreddit and user sources will stop updating then. Before that date, Burbl will mark such sources as gone instead of showing an error, skip them when refreshing, and keep their old articles readable. We are also making open alternatives easy to add: Lemmy communities (a Reddit-like, open network), Mastodon accounts and hashtags, Bluesky profiles and Hacker News.
